Two-phase dynamic MPM formulation for unsaturated soil

Abstract In this paper, a computational framework based on the Material Point Method is developed to study coupled seepage-deformation process in unsaturated soils. Governing equations are derived from balance of solid and liquid phases accounting for partial saturation effects, soil discretized with single set material points which move according displacement phase. The implementation different types boundary conditions, such as transient hydraulic head, seepage face, infiltration/evaporation, discussed detail. method applied simulate levee collapse due rapid drawdown rainfall. methodology proposed paper promising tool advance current practice, customarily evaluates slope safety only by means small deformation analyses FEM or LEM, while here large approach presented.
